Fire Protection Performance Specification

D.B.K. Engineering Ltd. prepares performance-based fire protection specifications that ensure life safety, code compliance, and project success. We collaborate closely with architects, engineers, contractors, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) to deliver clear, coordinated specifications that define exactly what each system must achieve.

Important: D.B.K. Engineering prepares performance specifications for fire protection systems. We do not design sprinkler systems. Our specifications define the design criteria that your sprinkler designer and trade contractors will use to design and build the system.

Sprinkler Systems (Wet & Dry)

We prepare NFPA 13/14-compliant performance specifications covering hazard occupancy classification, water demand criteria, design-by-others requirements, water demand criteria, and sprinkler coverage for rooftop mechanical equipment — giving the sprinkler design-build contractor a clear, enforceable performance basis.

Standpipe Systems

DBK provides Class I, II, and III standpipe performance specifications per NFPA 14, defining hose connection locations, required pressures and flow rates for firefighter use, and pressure-reducing valve criteria for high-rise applications — fully coordinated with the AHJ and local fire department requirements.

Fire Pump & Water Supply

We prepare performance specifications for electric fire pumps and jockey pumps, covering required pump capacity and head, pressure and flow requirements, suction and discharge arrangements, and water supply analysis. All specifications comply with NFPA 20 and are sized to meet the demand of the full fire protection system.

Fire Alarm & Detection

Our fire alarm performance specifications cover detection coverage requirements, notification appliance coverage, visual notification, emergency communication system interface, monitoring connections, and AHJ/ULC listing requirements — all in compliance with NFPA 72 and NBC requirements.

Smoke Control Systems

DBK prepares smoke control performance specifications for stairwell pressurization, mechanical smoke exhaust, and atrium smoke management systems. Our specifications define fan capacity and pressure criteria, damper requirements, door pressurization, controls integration with the fire alarm system, and testing and commissioning requirements.

Fire Department Connection & Special Hazards

We specify FDC location, accessibility, and connection type requirements, as well as performance criteria for special hazard systems including kitchen hood suppression, electrical room protection, generator room protection, and EV charging infrastructure fire safety — in compliance with NFPA standards and local AHJ requirements.

Code Compliance

All DBK fire protection performance specifications are prepared in compliance with applicable NFPA standards, the National Building Code of Canada (NBC), the National Fire Code (NFC), and local AHJ requirements across Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, and Saskatchewan. We work proactively with the AHJ throughout the design process to ensure a smooth permit approval.
